The “Surya Jyoti” project is initiated by BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.) as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities aimed at empowering rural India through the provision of solar lighting solutions.

Project Highlights
– Thrust Area: The project focuses on promoting renewable and clean energy solutions to enhance the quality of life in rural communities, aligning with the “Green India” initiative.

– Objective: The primary goal is to offer sustainable and affordable solar lighting systems to underserved villages, significantly reducing their reliance on electricity and other fossil fuels.

– Scope: The initiative includes the installation of 50 solar streetlights and numerous household solar lighting units in various selected rural and remote areas of India over a 12-month period.

– Beneficiaries: The project is expected to impact approximately 500–600 households, reaching around 2,500 individuals, particularly benefiting children, women, as well as marginalized communities (SC/ST, OBC, and minority groups).

Key Activities
– Conducting a baseline survey to assess the needs and current situation.
– Procuring high-quality solar energy equipment for installation.
– Carrying out the installation of solar lighting systems.
– Providing user training to ensure effective use and maintenance of the systems.
– Implementing awareness campaigns to educate the community about the benefits of solar energy.
– Building the capacity of local individuals for ongoing maintenance of the solar systems.

Expected Impact
The project is anticipated to lead to improved educational outcomes by extending study hours for children, enhancing safety for women and children in rural areas, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and enabling households to save money by cutting down on fuel costs.

Sustainability Measures
To ensure long-term success, the project will train local youth as solar technicians responsible for maintenance. Additionally, a community maintenance fund will be established to foster ownership and sustainability within the community.
