India’s HPV Vaccination Initiative
India is launching a phased HPV vaccination drive to fight cervical cancer, targeting girls aged 9-14.

Target Demographic and Approach
– NTAGI recommends HPV vaccine inclusion in the Universal Immunization Programme.
– Initial focus on girls aged 9-14, followed by routine vaccination at age 9.
– Vaccinations will occur in schools (grades 5-10) and through health facilities for out-of-school girls.

Cervical Cancer in India
– India contributes significantly to global cervical cancer cases and deaths.
– Low national screening prevalence; most cases diagnosed at advanced stages.

HPV Vaccination as Prevention
– HPV infection, a major cervical cancer cause, is preventable with vaccines.
– Countries like the UK and Sweden show reduced cervical cancer rates post-vaccination.

Challenges and Opportunities
– Challenges: Low awareness, cultural barriers, misinformation, and vaccination costs.
– Opportunities:
– Indigenous Vaccine: CERVAVAC launched in 2022 to address cost.
– Cost-effectiveness: HPV vaccination is economically viable in India.
